Natasha’s Law Food Labelling Changes

Introducing Natasha's Law

Natasha’s Law is designed to give those with allergies complete certainty that the PPDS food they are buying is safe for them to eat.

Before it was implemented, businesses selling food prepared on the same premises where it was sold didn't need to print allergen labels for their produce and this meant that allergy sufferers had to ask staff for the allergen information - which could be unreliable.

From October 1st 2021, new laws made it mandatory for food-to-go to have a full list of ingredients printed on their food label.

Allergen Labelling Laws For Cafes

Why is the law around allergen labelling changing?

The law follows the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who died after an allergic reaction to sesame seeds in 2016.

The new law, known as ‘Natasha’s Law,’ includes stricter requirements for foods to present all allergens on their food labels. The hope is this will prevent deaths and allergic reactions in the future. It is estimated that between 1-10% of adults and children have a food hypersensitivity. However as many as 20% of the population experience some reactions to foods that make them believe they do have a food hypersensitivity.

“This is an important and welcome step towards our ambition for the UK to become the best place in the world for people who have food allergies and intolerances.”
